Health testing in the Presa Canario breed is very sparse. Sadly, the Presa is very BYB bred in the US and health testing is almost unheard of. There are only a handful (5 breeders?) that actively health test.
We have used PennHip exclusively in the past but we have decided to change up & only test with OFA.
This will definitely make things difficult as there any many very well scored PennHip Presas that score failing with OFA.
Breed PennHip average is .54. PennHip is the “go to” for Presas but the more research I’ve done, it seems like the “way to get a better score” option. You can definitely do PennHip WHILE doing OFA if your vet is certified. Our vet isn’t so we will not being doing it. He’s not a fan of PennHip. I understand if this ruffles some feathers.
This is just our opinion.
We will be only breeding minimum of Mild OFA scoring to Excellent/Good score males.
This will be EXTREMELY hard as there is only 167 OFA passing hip scores in the entire database. 19 Excellents with only 8 being males & 5 living. There are 40 goods with only 14 being males.
We will not be breeding any dogs with remodeling or
osteoarthritis/degenerative joint disease in the hips.
Sadly some dogs have failed & they were placed in loving homes after they were spayed.
We will however try our best to find and breed appropriate males to Mild females that have minimal subluxation to only OFA excellent/good males.
Elbow Dysplasia isn't super common in Presas. I have had only 1 dog not pass. We will accept Grade 1 due to DJD. We will not breed if due to UAP, FCP, or Osteochondrosis.
